Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang is a tropical flowering plant native to the Maluku Islands of eastern Indonesia. Its name comes from the Filipino word "alang ilang" which means "the flower of all flowers".

History shows that in 1860, Albertus Schwenger, a German sailor, was impressed by the enchanting scent of the flowers of this plant and created the first distillation unit to extract the essential oil, in Manila. From 1860 to 1950, the Philippines experienced a golden age of ylang ylang essential oil production.

Today, distillation of the flowers has been postponed there. In the 19th century, spice hunters transported the first ylang ylang seedlings from the Maluku Islands to the Reunion Islands. Production first began in the twentieth century.
