In Germany, pine needles were used to make a "forest wool" (wald-wolle), which was used in mattresses, and since then it has been famous for making mattresses for people with rheumatism.
They also boiled the needles in alkaline water and then extracted the "forest essential oil" from that water. This was then used in washes against gout and rheumatism. They also prepared a "balsamic pine needle syrup".
