Pepper has been known in Europe since ancient times. It gained value so quickly that it even served as currency.
When the Gorths conquered Rome in the year 408, they demanded a tribute of 3,000 pounds of pepper along with gold and silver. In some times pepper was worth as much as gold. After all, the search for pepper was the main motivation for Vasco da Gama to start his travels. Pepper was used by the Romans in spices and medicine. Dioscorides used it against diseases of the nerves, especially against epilepsy. The Arabs used it against rheumatism.
In Middle Ages, the school of Salerno held it in high esteem and used it for coughs, to bring down fevers. He recommended a pepper sauce, with mint and cinnamon.
In Renaissance, pepper was used against fever and general weakness. In the 16th century it was used for its tonic and aphrodisiac properties which are recognized to this day. It was used in various important preparations of the time.
In 19th century, pepper was used to make a drink for the anorexic and the anemic. It had antipyretic, tonic and rejuvenating properties.
