Frankincense was used by the ancient Egyptians in their religious ceremonies. The Egyptians were famous users of aromatic materials, either to perfume and preserve dead bodies as mummies, to use them as perfume in the form of salve, or to burn them as incense.
In Christian tradition, frankincense was one of the three gifts offered by the Magi to the infant Jesus.
Pliny the Elder described the characteristics of good quality frankincense and mentioned it as an antidote to hemlock poisoning.
The Iranian physician Avicenna recommended it for a wide range of physical ailments.
