In the 14th century, English sailors in the Royal Navy discovered that drinking lemon juice daily helped prevent scurvy, painful joints and other common ailments.
Archaeological evidence confirms that lemons have been cultivated for more than 4,000 years, and came out of Asia around 200 BC. where they are said to have been used in Israel as part of Jewish rituals. Until 200 AD traders had brought the lemons to northern Italy.
In some societies, lemons functioned as a symbol of status and wealth. In Rome, China and Egypt, lemons were considered a prized luxury and the most elite households decorated their homes and gardens with lemon trees as a way to show off their wealth to their guests.
Another cultural role lemons have played throughout history is as a keeper of secrets. As early as the 5th century BC, lemon juice was used by the Greeks and Persians in times of war to create invisible ink. The invisible ink based on lemon juice was used by generals and spies to transmit sensitive information that they did not want their enemies to know.
