Patchouli is native to Asia and its first applications were developed in South India where it was used as a medicine, as an insect repellent and in herbal teas.
Hundreds of years later, through the trade routes of the Middle East it arrived in Europe where it became a valuable commodity. In Ancient Egypt, Tutankhamun had ten gallons of this oil buried with him. The name is believed to be derived from the Hindi word "patcholi" meaning "to smell".
In the 1700s it was used to mask the smell of human decay during funerals.
In the 1800s it was used as an insect repellent to keep bugs away when transporting clothing from Asia to the rest of the world. It quickly became associated with high fashion and wealth.
Today, it has many uses and benefits, from health and cosmetic to spiritual and holistic. When used in aromatherapy, it is used to create an atmosphere of relaxation.
